Every June, thousands of fireflies (hotaru) light up rivers and rice paddies across Japan. Firefly watching is one of Japan’s most magical seasonal traditions, and it is almost entirely unknown to international visitors.
Best Firefly Spots

Tatsuno (Nagano)
Known as the Firefly Capital of Japan. The Tatsuno Hotaru Festival (June) draws thousands of locals who watch clouds of fireflies dance over the Tenryu River. The best viewing is 7:30-9:30 PM on warm, humid evenings.
Hino (Shiga)
The Hino River is one of Japan’s top firefly viewing locations. Thousands of genji-botaru (the larger species) create rivers of light. Free viewing, just walk along the riverbank after sunset.
Kuala Hotaru Park – Tokyo Area
Several parks and gardens in greater Tokyo release bred fireflies for viewing in late May to June. Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo has a famous firefly garden in their grounds. Various parks in Yokohama and Chiba also host firefly events.
How to Enjoy Firefly Watching
- Season: Late May to mid-July, peaking in mid-June
- Best conditions: Warm, humid evenings with no wind and no moon
- No flashlights: Bright lights scare fireflies away. Let your eyes adjust to the dark.
- No bug spray: Chemicals harm the fireflies and their habitat
- Stay quiet: Noise disturbs them. Whisper and enjoy.
