Spring (March-May): Sansai – Mountain Vegetables

Locals head into the mountains to harvest wild plants like warabi (bracken fern), taranome (angelica tree buds), and fuki (butterbur). Many rural areas offer guided foraging walks followed by cooking and eating your harvest. Tempura made from freshly picked sansai is unforgettable.

Autumn (September-November): Chestnuts and Mushrooms

Kuri-hiroi (chestnut picking) is a beloved autumn activity for Japanese families. Farms across Kanto and Kansai offer pick-your-own experiences for 1,000-2,000 yen. Roasted on the spot or made into chestnut rice (kuri-gohan).

Matsutake mushrooms are Japan’s most prized wild mushroom, fetching prices of 30,000-100,000 yen per kilo. Some mountain lodges offer guided mushroom hunting experiences (with expert identification since some wild mushrooms are poisonous).

Acorns (Donguri)

Children and families collect acorns in parks throughout autumn. While mainly decorative, some species are traditionally used to make donguri mochi (acorn rice cakes) in rural areas.
