Kabukiza Theater – Tokyo (Ginza)

Japan’s most famous kabuki theater. Full performances run 4-5 hours with intermissions. But here is the local secret: you can buy single-act tickets (hitomaku-mi) for 1,500-2,500 yen. Watch just one act (60-90 minutes) from the top balcony. No reservation needed — queue at the single-act entrance on the left side of the building.

National Theatre – Tokyo

Offers performances with English audio guides (800 yen rental) that explain every scene in real-time. Tickets from 3,000 yen. This is the best option for first-timers.

Minamiza – Kyoto

The oldest kabuki theater in Japan, located in Gion. The December kaomise performance featuring all top actors is the most prestigious event in kabuki. Tickets sell out fast but are worth the effort.

What to Expect

  • All male cast: Female roles (onnagata) are played by male specialists
  • Audience participation: During dramatic moments, audience members shout the actor’s family stage name (yago). This is encouraged!
  • Intermissions: Use breaks to eat ekiben (theater bento) available at the theater
  • No dress code: Casual clothes are fine
