Winter in Japan is magical and massively underrated. While most tourists visit during cherry blossom season, locals will tell you that winter offers some of Japan’s most unforgettable experiences – from snow monkeys in hot springs to illumination festivals lighting up entire cities.
Snow Country Experiences

Shirakawa-go in Winter
The thatched-roof village covered in snow looks like a fairy tale. The annual winter illumination (January-February) lights up the village against the snow. Apply for viewing tickets months in advance through the official website.
Zao Snow Monsters – Yamagata
Trees covered in frozen snow create alien-like shapes called juhyo (snow monsters). You can ski or snowboard through them at Zao Onsen Ski Resort, then soak in the sulfuric hot springs. Nothing like this exists anywhere else on Earth.
Otaru Snow Light Path – Hokkaido
In February, the canal town of Otaru lights hundreds of snow lanterns along its famous canal. The warm glow reflected in the water is incredibly romantic. Combine with fresh sushi at the Otaru fish market.
Winter Hot Springs
Jigokudani Monkey Park – Nagano
Wild snow monkeys bathing in natural hot springs surrounded by snow. One of Japan’s most photographed scenes. The 30-minute walk through snowy forest to reach the park is part of the experience. Open year-round but winter (December-March) is best.
Ginzan Onsen – Yamagata
A tiny hot spring town that looks like it belongs in a Ghibli movie. Traditional wooden ryokan line a narrow river, lit by gas lamps at night. In winter, snow covers everything and the steam from the hot springs creates a dreamlike atmosphere.
Winter Food

- Nabe (hot pot): Every region has its own version. Locals gather around a bubbling pot of meat, vegetables, and tofu.
- Oden: Convenience store oden (stewed fish cakes and vegetables) is a winter staple. 100-200 yen per item.
- Ramen: Nothing beats a hot bowl of ramen on a freezing day.
- Mikan (tangerines): Eating mikan under a kotatsu (heated table) is the quintessential Japanese winter experience.
Winter Illuminations
- Nabana no Sato (Mie) – Japan’s largest illumination with millions of LED lights
- Kobe Luminarie (December) – Stunning light tunnel in memory of the 1995 earthquake
- Tokyo Midtown – Starlight Garden transforms the park into a galaxy
