Manga Cafes in Japan: The Ultimate Budget Stay and Local Experience

Manga cafes (manga kissa) are one of Japan’s most unique cultural experiences – and one of the cheapest places to spend the night. Part library, part internet cafe, part budget hotel, manga cafes are where Japanese people go to read, relax, nap, and kill time.

What Is a Manga Cafe?

A manga cafe gives you a private booth or open seat with access to thousands of manga volumes, unlimited soft drinks, free WiFi, and often showers and blankets. You pay by the hour (200-500 yen per hour) or use overnight packages (1,500-2,500 yen for 8-12 hours).

How to Use a Manga Cafe

  1. Enter and choose your seat type: Open seat (cheapest), reclining seat, private booth, or flat mat room (best for sleeping)
  2. Get your membership card: First-time visitors need to register with ID (passport works). Takes 2 minutes.
  3. Enjoy: Browse manga shelves, use the drink bar, watch movies, play games, or just sleep
  4. Pay on exit: Your time is tracked automatically

  • Kaikatsu Club: Japan’s largest chain. Clean, well-maintained, with showers and laundry. Flat mat rooms are excellent for overnight stays.
  • Popeye: Great manga selection and comfortable booths
  • Gran Cyber Cafe Bagus: Upscale option with massage chairs and premium drinks

Pro Tips

  • Overnight packs: Enter after 10 PM for the cheapest overnight rate. Some offer dinner + overnight combos.
  • Missed the last train? Manga cafes are the cheapest and most comfortable option until morning trains start at 5 AM.
  • Free amenities: Most provide blankets, ear plugs, toothbrushes, and phone chargers.
  • Food: Many have food menus with curry, ramen, and toast. Not gourmet, but affordable.
