The tuna auction may have moved to Toyosu, but Tsukiji’s outer market is still where Tokyo locals go for the freshest seafood breakfast in the world. Here is how to experience both markets like a local.
Tsukiji Outer Market – Still the Best

The inner wholesale market moved to Toyosu in 2018, but the outer market (jogai shijo) remains with 400+ shops and restaurants. This is where local chefs buy ingredients and food lovers come for breakfast.
What to Eat
- Sushi breakfast: Skip the long-line tourist spots. Walk deeper into the market and find shops where Japanese people are eating. Budget: 2,000-4,000 yen for excellent sushi.
- Tamagoyaki: Japanese rolled omelette. Tsukiji has the best in Tokyo. Eat it fresh on a stick for 200 yen.
- Uni (sea urchin): Fresh sea urchin eaten straight from the shell. Rich, creamy, and nothing like the old uni you get overseas.
- Grilled scallops and oysters: Street vendors grill them right in front of you for 500-1,000 yen.
Best Time to Visit
Arrive by 7-8 AM for the full experience. By 10 AM, the best items sell out and tourist crowds arrive. Closed on Sundays and some Wednesdays.
Toyosu Fish Market
The new wholesale market is clean and modern. The main attraction is the tuna auction viewing deck (free, from 5:30 AM). The market restaurants serve excellent sushi at wholesale prices. Less atmospheric than Tsukiji but the fish is just as fresh.
