Best Sake Regions to Visit

Niigata – The Sake Capital

Niigata produces more sake than any other prefecture. The cold climate and pristine mountain water create clean, crisp sake. Ponshukan in Niigata Station has a tasting room with 90+ local sakes – 500 yen for 5 tastings. Then drive to the countryside breweries for private tours.

Fushimi, Kyoto

Fushimi has been brewing sake for over 400 years. Gekkeikan Okura Museum offers tours and tastings in a beautiful traditional warehouse. The water here is naturally soft, creating smooth, elegant sake.

Nada, Kobe

The Nada district has the highest concentration of sake breweries in Japan. Many are free to visit and offer generous tastings. Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum is excellent for beginners.

What to Know Before You Visit

  • Brewing season: October to March is when sake is actively brewed. Tours during this period let you see the actual process.
  • Reservations: Smaller breweries require advance booking. Call or email ahead.
  • Tasting etiquette: Sip, don’t gulp. It is OK to spit into a provided cup at formal tastings.
  • Designated driver: If you are driving to breweries, designate a non-drinking driver or use taxis between stops.
