What Is Koyo? Japan’s Autumn Leaf Season
Koyo (紅葉) — Japan’s autumn leaf season — is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. Maples, ginkgos, and Japanese oaks turn blazing red, orange, and gold, transforming temples, parks, and mountain forests into a sea of colour. Unlike cherry blossom season, which lasts 1–2 weeks, koyo in Japan unfolds over two months as the colour front gradually moves south from Hokkaido in September to southern Kyushu in December.
For many seasoned Japan travellers, autumn rivals or surpasses spring as the best time to visit. Crowds are smaller than cherry blossom season, the air is cool and comfortable for walking, and the combination of coloured leaves with ancient temple architecture is breathtaking.
Japan Autumn Leaves Peak Timing 2026 (By Region)
- Hokkaido: Late September – mid October. Japan’s northernmost island sees colour first. Daisetsuzan National Park and Sounkyo Gorge are spectacular.
- Tohoku & Nikko: Mid–late October. Nikko National Park (2 hours from Tokyo) is Japan’s most accessible premium autumn leaf destination. Irohazaka switchback road through coloured forest. See our Nikko driving guide.
- Tokyo: Late October – mid November. Shinjuku Gyoen, Koishikawa Korakuen, and Rikugien gardens have excellent colour displays.
- Hakone & Fuji Five Lakes: Late October – mid November. Mt. Fuji reflected in Lake Kawaguchi surrounded by maple-covered hills is an iconic image. See our Hakone guide.
- Kyoto: Mid–late November. Japan’s premier koyo destination — dozens of temples where momiji maples frame stone gardens and temple rooflines. Tofuku-ji, Eikan-do, and Kiyomizudera are the top spots.
- Osaka & Nara: Late November – early December. Slightly later than Kyoto. Nara Park’s maple-lined paths and the autumn light at Kasuga Taisha are exceptional.

Best Autumn Leaf Spots in Kyoto
Tofuku-ji Temple
The finest koyo viewing spot in Kyoto. The Tsutenkyo Bridge over a maple-filled valley provides one of Japan’s most-photographed autumn images. Arrive before 8am on peak weekends — queues for the bridge can reach 2+ hours by 10am. Free to walk the grounds; ¥600 to access the bridge area.

Evening illuminations (ライトアップ) in November transform this hillside temple into something magical. Maples lit from below reflect in the temple pond. Book ahead for timed entry. Peak: mid–late November.

Practical Koyo Tips
- Track peak timing: Japan Meteorological Corporation publishes annual koyo forecasts (available in English on major travel sites). Peak varies by 1–2 weeks year to year depending on summer temperatures.
- Book ryokan early: Hakone and Kyoto ryokan during peak autumn fill up 3–6 months in advance. See our ryokan guide.
- Avoid peak weekends in Kyoto: The final two weekends of November in Kyoto are extremely crowded. Weekday visits or early morning arrivals (before 9am) are significantly better.
- Evening illuminations (ライトアップ): Many temples offer special evening admission with illuminated autumn leaves. Tickets sell out — book weeks in advance for major venues.
