Why Tokyo Is a Photographer’s Dream
Tokyo is arguably the world’s most photogenic city — a place where ancient temples sit next to neon-lit alleyways, traditional wooden houses share streets with glass skyscrapers, and every neighbourhood has a visual character unlike the last. Whether you’re shooting on a smartphone or a professional camera, the city consistently delivers extraordinary images.
This guide covers the 20 best photo spots — organised by area — with practical tips on the best time to visit each one.

Shibuya: Tokyo’s Most Iconic Shots
1. Shibuya Crossing (Scramble Intersection)
The world’s most famous pedestrian crossing, best shot from above. Ground level: Stand on the crossing itself during the scramble for the immersive experience. From above: Starbucks second floor (free, just buy a drink), Mag’s Park above Shibuya Q-front, or the paid Shibuya Sky observation deck. Best time: Blue hour (30 minutes after sunset) on a weekday for maximum crowd density and neon glow.
2. Shibuya Sky (Observation Deck)
The rooftop deck of Shibuya Scramble Square offers aerial views of the crossing and stretches of Tokyo in every direction. Glass floors, outdoor terrace, Mt. Fuji view on clear days. ¥2,000. See our Shibuya Sky guide.
3. Daikanyama / Nakameguro Canal
The Meguro River canal in Nakameguro — lined with cherry trees that bloom in late March, and boutique cafes and restaurants year-round. Best time: Cherry blossom season at night (lanterns light the canal), or blue hour in autumn.
Asakusa & East Tokyo
4. Senso-ji Temple Main Gate (Kaminarimon)
The giant red lantern framed by the approaching Nakamise street. Best time: Dawn (5:30–7am) before crowds arrive, or blue hour when the lantern is illuminated.
5. Tokyo Skytree from Oshiage
The tower reflected in the canal near Oshiage Station. Best time: Blue hour or at night when the tower illumination changes colour.
6. Tokyo Tower from Shiba Park
The classic Tokyo Tower shot with trees in the foreground. Best time: Cherry blossom season in late March/early April, or autumn with coloured leaves. Night illumination shots are excellent year-round.

Shinjuku
7. Shinjuku Golden Gai at Night
A dense warren of tiny alleyways with over 200 miniature bars packed into a city block. Neon signs, lanterns, atmospheric narrow lanes. Best time: 7pm–10pm. See our Golden Gai guide.
8. Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane)
The narrow alley near Shinjuku Station filled with tiny yakitori stalls, smoke, and yellow lanterns. Quintessential old Tokyo. Best time: After dark when smoke from grills fills the alley.
9. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Free Observation)
The free observation deck at 202m offers panoramic views comparable to Tokyo Tower — and it’s completely free. At night, Tokyo’s city grid stretches in every direction. Best time: Clear winter evenings for Mt. Fuji views.
Harajuku & Omotesando
10. Takeshita Street
Harajuku’s main pedestrian street, packed with kawaii fashion, candy colours, and the most visually intense shopping experience in Tokyo. Best time: 10am–12pm on weekdays before it gets extremely crowded.
11. Meiji Shrine Forest Path
The 700-metre gravel path through ancient forest leading to Meiji Shrine. Tall cedar trees, seasonal decorations, and near-silence despite being in the middle of Tokyo. Best time: Early morning for mist and low-angle sunlight through the trees.
12. Omotesando Zelkova Trees
Tokyo’s most elegant boulevard, lined with massive zelkova trees that create a canopy effect in summer and blazing autumn colour in November. Best time: Autumn (late October–November) for the leaf colours, or winter evenings during the Omotesando Illumination festival.

Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss
13. Yanaka Cemetery
An old cemetery in Yanaka, north Tokyo, lined with massive cherry trees that bloom dramatically in April. The main avenue becomes a tunnel of pink. Quiet, local, and extraordinary during blossom season.
14. Shimokitazawa Backstreets
A bohemian neighbourhood of narrow lanes, vintage clothing shops, and live music venues. Shoot the layered street-level visual complexity — signs, bikes, old wooden buildings. Best time: Afternoon golden hour.
15. Gotokuji Temple (Lucky Cat Shrine)
Hundreds of white ceramic maneki-neko (beckoning cats) lined up at an ancient temple in Setagaya. Surreal and uniquely Japanese. See our Gotokuji guide.
16. Koenji Alleyways
A counter-culture neighbourhood with dense, layered street art, vintage shops, and old shotengai shopping arcades. Great street photography.
Tokyo from Moving Vehicles
17. Rainbow Bridge Night Crossing
Driving across Rainbow Bridge at night with Odaiba’s neon skyline on one side and Tokyo’s city grid on the other is one of the most cinematic experiences in Tokyo. Best captured from a car with a dashcam or GoPro.
18. Elevated Expressway Over Ginza
The Shuto Expressway elevated section running above Ginza gives a unique overhead view of Tokyo’s most glamorous district. Again, best shot from a moving car.
19. Wangan (Bay Area) at Night
The coastal expressway from Tatsumi to Odaiba at night — the city lights reflected in Tokyo Bay, the Rainbow Bridge in the distance. Japan’s most iconic night drive. See our Tokyo night drive guide. Samurai Car Japan is the obvious choice for this route.
20. Yurikamome Monorail Over Rainbow Bridge
The driverless Yurikamome monorail crosses Rainbow Bridge from Shimbashi to Odaiba — sit at the front for a dramatic first-person view of the bridge, the bay, and Mt. Fuji on clear days. ¥370, no extra charge for the view.
