What Is a Ryokan?

A ryokan (旅館) is a traditional Japanese inn — the equivalent of a boutique hotel but filtered through centuries of Japanese hospitality philosophy. You sleep on futon laid on tatami floors, eat an elaborate multi-course kaiseki dinner in your room or a private dining room, wear a cotton yukata robe throughout your stay, and soak in communal or private onsen (hot spring) baths.

Staying in a ryokan is not just accommodation — it's a cultural experience, and for many visitors to Japan, it becomes the highlight of their trip. Prices typically include dinner and breakfast (two meals), making the per-night cost less intimidating than it first appears.

Types of Ryokan: Finding the Right One for You

  • Luxury Ryokan (Ryotei-level) — Full kaiseki, private onsen in-room, dedicated attendant. Expect ¥50,000–¥150,000+ per person including meals. Found in Hakone, Kyoto Higashiyama, Kinosaki Onsen.
  • Mid-range Ryokan — Communal onsen, communal or in-room dining, yukata provided. ¥15,000–¥35,000 per person including meals. Most common category.
  • Budget Ryokan/Minshuku — Family-run inns with simple tatami rooms and shared facilities. ¥5,000–¥10,000 per person. More like a B&B with Japanese styling.
  • Onsen Ryokan vs. Non-Onsen — Some ryokan are specifically built around natural hot spring access. If you want an authentic onsen experience, confirm the ryokan has its own source (gensen kakke-nagashi = pure hot spring overflow).

Best Ryokan Near Tokyo

Hakone is the easiest onsen destination from Tokyo (90 minutes by Romancecar train) and has the highest concentration of high-quality ryokan in Japan.

  • Gora Kadan (Hakone) — Former imperial family villa turned luxury ryokan. Mt. Fuji views, multiple private onsen. ¥80,000+ per person.
  • Hakone Gora Byakudan (Hakone) — More accessible luxury, stunning garden, multiple rotenburo (outdoor baths). ¥40,000+ per person.
  • Fukuzumiro (Hakone-Yumoto) — Built in 1890, a true historic ryokan with Meiji-era architecture. Mid-range pricing around ¥25,000 per person.
  • Yama no Chaya Rozan (Izu Peninsula) — Cliffside rotenburo overlooking the ocean. 2.5 hours from Tokyo. ¥30,000+ per person.

Best Ryokan in Kyoto

  • Tawaraya — Widely considered Japan's finest ryokan, open since 1709. Hosted countless heads of state. Extremely difficult to book; personal introduction preferred. ¥150,000+ per person.
  • Hiiragiya (Kyoto) — Historic inn near Nijo Castle. Two buildings: original historic (higher price) and annex (more accessible). ¥50,000–¥100,000 per person.
  • Yoshida Sanso (Higashiyama) — Former imperial prince's villa. Stunning garden, near Yoshida Shrine. ¥40,000+ per person.
  • Kyoto Nanzenji Sankyo-in — Mid-range option near Nanzen-ji temple, small garden, good value at ¥20,000–¥30,000 per person.

Best Onsen Town Ryokan Experiences

Some of Japan's best ryokan experiences are in dedicated onsen towns where the entire destination revolves around hot spring bathing:

  • Kinosaki Onsen (Hyogo) — A perfectly preserved onsen town with 7 public bathhouses connected by lantern-lit stone streets. Stay at any ryokan, receive a bathing pass for all 7 baths, wander in yukata between them. One of Japan's most authentic onsen experiences. ¥20,000–¥40,000 per person.
  • Kurokawa Onsen (Kumamoto, Kyushu) — Remote mountain hot spring village, arguably Japan's most beautiful onsen town. Each ryokan has its own open-air bath style. ¥20,000–¥50,000 per person.
  • Kusatsu Onsen (Gunma) — Famous for its yubatake (hot water field) and acidic sulfuric spring water, said to cure all illnesses except lovesickness. See our full Kusatsu guide here.
  • Beppu (Oita) — Japan's most prolific hot spring city with 8 distinct spring types. More urban than the above, but ryokan quality is high.

Ryokan Etiquette: What You Need to Know

  • Remove shoes at the entrance (genkan). Wear slippers inside; remove slippers on tatami.
  • Yukata — Wrap left side over right (right over left is for funerals). Tie the belt twice.
  • Onsen — Shower thoroughly before entering the communal bath. No swimsuits. Tattoos may be prohibited at some ryokan (see our tattoo-friendly onsen guide).
  • Meals — Kaiseki dinner is usually served at a set time (often 6pm or 7pm). Confirm your preference when booking. Some ryokan serve in your room, others in a dining hall.
  • Futon — Staff will lay out your futon while you're at dinner. Don't do it yourself; it's part of the service.
  • Checkout time — Typically 10am–11am. Breakfast is usually 8am.

How to Book a Ryokan

Use Jalan or Rakuten Travel for domestic Japanese ryokan with English interfaces. Relais & Châteaux covers ultra-luxury properties. Many high-end ryokan don't accept direct online bookings — book via your hotel concierge or a travel agent.
