Japan’s Visa Policy: The Good News for Most Visitors
Japan has one of the world’s most generous visa-free travel policies. Citizens of over 68 countries can enter Japan without a visa for tourism purposes — typically for 90 days. If you’re from North America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or most of East and Southeast Asia, you almost certainly don’t need to apply for a visa in advance.
This guide covers: who can enter visa-free, what to do if you need a visa, the registration requirements introduced in 2024–2025, and practical entry tips.
Visa-Free Countries (Major List, 2026)
The following countries can enter Japan for tourism without a visa (typical stay limit: 90 days unless noted):
- Americas: USA (90 days), Canada (90 days), Mexico (90 days), Brazil (90 days), Argentina (90 days), Chile (90 days), Colombia (90 days)
- Europe: All EU/EEA countries (90 days), UK (90 days), Switzerland (90 days), Norway (90 days)
- Asia-Pacific: Australia (90 days), New Zealand (90 days), Singapore (90 days), Malaysia (90 days), South Korea (90 days), Brunei (90 days), Hong Kong (90 days), Macao (90 days)
- Others: UAE (90 days), Qatar (90 days), Israel (90 days), Bahrain (90 days)
Note: Visa-free entry is for tourism and short-term business only. Working, studying, or staying longer requires the appropriate visa category.
Countries That Require a Visa to Enter Japan
Citizens of most South Asian, African, Central Asian, and some Southeast Asian countries require a visa. This includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, most African nations, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and others.
Additionally, China does NOT have blanket visa-free access to Japan as of 2026 (individual tourist visas are required; limited group tourism visas were reintroduced in 2023 — check current status with Japanese Embassy or consulate).

How to Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa
If you require a visa, here’s the standard process:
- Step 1: Identify your nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate (or authorised visa agency in your country).
- Step 2: Prepare required documents (see below).
- Step 3: Submit application in person or via authorised agency. Japan generally does not accept mailed applications.
- Step 4: Wait 3–7 business days for processing (longer during peak application periods).
- Step 5: Collect your passport with visa sticker from the embassy/consulate or pickup point.
Required Documents for Japan Tourist Visa
- Valid passport (6+ months remaining validity)
- Completed visa application form (available on Japanese embassy website)
- Passport-size photo (45mm × 45mm, white background, taken within last 6 months)
- Copy of flight itinerary (proof of return ticket)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation for entire stay)
- Bank statements showing sufficient funds (last 3 months, typically ¥200,000+ per week of stay as a rough guide)
- Proof of employment or enrollment (employment letter, payslip, or university enrollment certificate)
- Travel itinerary (day-by-day plan of activities)
Some embassies have additional requirements. Always check the specific embassy website for your country of residence.
Japan’s Visit Japan Web Registration (Required for All)
Since 2023, Japan has promoted (but not yet made mandatory) the Visit Japan Web service for pre-registering immigration and customs information. While currently optional for many nationalities, registering in advance significantly speeds up immigration processing on arrival — instead of filling out paper forms on the plane, you present a QR code at the immigration counter.
Register at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp (available in English, Chinese, Korean, and other languages). Recommended for all visitors regardless of nationality.

Practical Entry Tips
- Immigration queue: Peak arrival times at Narita and Haneda (especially Sunday evenings) can mean 1–2 hour immigration queues. Pre-register on Visit Japan Web to use faster lanes.
- Customs declaration: Required for everyone. Most visitors have nothing to declare; the green lane is fast. See the customs prohibited items list above (packing guide has details).
- 90-day stay: Cannot be extended for tourist visa-free entries. Do not attempt to do a “visa run” to Korea and re-enter — Japanese immigration officers are aware of this tactic and may deny re-entry.
- Working holiday visas: Japan has working holiday agreements with Australia, UK, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand, France, South Korea, and others. These allow 1–2 year stays with work permission.
Planning Your Japan Trip
Once your entry paperwork is sorted, the real planning begins. For car enthusiasts, make sure your International Driving Permit is organised before departure — this is required for renting a car in Japan, including JDM sports car experiences with Samurai Car Japan. IDPs are obtained from your home country’s automobile association (AAA, RAC, NZAA, etc.) and cannot be obtained inside Japan.
