Japan’s mountain streams are crystal clear and full of native trout. Stream fishing (keiryu tsuri) is a beloved outdoor activity for Japanese nature lovers, combining the beauty of mountain scenery with the meditative patience of fishing. It is one of the most peaceful experiences in Japan.
Where to Fish

Okutama (Tokyo)
Just 90 minutes from central Tokyo, Okutama has managed fishing areas where you can rent equipment and fish for yamame (cherry trout) and iwana (char). Day passes from 1,500 yen. Equipment rental available. Some areas offer catch-and-grill: cook your fish over charcoal riverside.
Nikko (Tochigi)
The Kinugawa River and its tributaries offer excellent trout fishing in a stunning mountain setting. Combine with a visit to Nikko’s temples and the famous Irohazaka mountain road.
Kamikochi (Nagano)
One of Japan’s most beautiful alpine valleys. Fly fishing for iwana in crystal-clear streams surrounded by 3,000-meter peaks. The scenery alone is worth the trip.
Types of Fishing
