Japan’s mountains and remote islands offer some of the clearest night skies in East Asia. Far from city lights, you can see the Milky Way, shooting stars, and even the zodiacal light. Stargazing is becoming increasingly popular in Japan, with designated star parks and overnight astro-tourism experiences.
Best Stargazing Locations

Achi Village (Nagano) – Japan’s Best Stars
Officially recognized as the best stargazing spot in Japan by the Ministry of Environment. The village runs a nighttime gondola (2,200 yen) that takes you up the mountain for guided stargazing sessions with telescopes. The Milky Way here is breathtaking. Winter skies are particularly clear.
Hateruma Island (Okinawa)
Japan’s southernmost inhabited island. The Southern Cross is visible from here, the only place in Japan where you can see it. Almost zero light pollution. The starry sky observatory offers free viewing sessions.
Hakuba (Nagano)
The ski resort area in summer offers pristine mountain air and dark skies. Several lodges offer rooftop stargazing with hot chocolate and blankets. The stars reflected in alpine lakes create double-sky views.
Lake Mashu (Hokkaido)
One of the clearest lakes in the world, surrounded by mountains with no artificial light. On clear nights, the stars reflect perfectly in the still water. Drive there via scenic Hokkaido roads.
Stargazing Tips
- Best seasons: Winter has the clearest skies. Summer Milky Way (July-September) is most dramatic.
- New moon nights: Plan around the lunar calendar for darkest skies
- Bring layers: Mountain areas get cold even in summer after midnight
- Use red light: Red flashlights preserve night vision
