Mashiko (Tochigi) – Pottery Town

Japan’s most famous pottery town, home to the mingei (folk craft) movement. Dozens of studios offer hands-on workshops from 2,000-5,000 yen. Make a cup, bowl, or plate and have it shipped home after firing. The annual Mashiko Pottery Fair in May draws 600,000 visitors. Just 2 hours from Tokyo by car through beautiful countryside.

Kyoto

Kiyomizu-yaki pottery has been produced in Kyoto for 400 years. Studios near Kiyomizu-dera offer wheel-throwing and hand-building workshops in traditional settings. 3,000-6,000 yen.

Arita and Imari (Saga, Kyushu)

The birthplace of Japanese porcelain. Tour historic kilns and try painting delicate blue-and-white patterns on fired pieces. Drive through the scenic Kyushu countryside between pottery towns.

Kintsugi – The Art of Golden Repair

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer, embracing imperfection as beauty. Workshops in Tokyo and Kyoto teach this philosophy through hands-on practice. Sessions run 2-3 hours for 5,000-12,000 yen. You repair a real broken piece and take it home.
