Onsen Etiquette: The Rules Every Visitor Must Know
Before You Enter
- Tattoos: Many traditional onsen prohibit tattoos. Private onsen (kashikiri) are always tattoo-friendly.
- Bring a small towel: Never put it in the water. Fold it and place on your head.
- Wash before entering: Always shower thoroughly at washing stations first.
In the Bath
- Enter slowly. Water is typically 40-44 degrees Celsius.
- Don’t swim or splash. Onsen is for relaxing.
- Keep conversations quiet.
- Stay hydrated before and after.
Best Local Onsen by Area
Hakone (1.5 hours from Tokyo)
Skip crowded day-spas. Find small family-run ryokan offering day-use bathing (higaeri nyuyoku) for 800-1,500 yen. Gora has sodium-rich water great for skin, Yumoto has classic sulfur springs.
Kusatsu (Gunma Prefecture)
Japan’s #1 hot spring town. 19 free public bathhouses throughout town. No reservations, no tourists, just incredible naturally acidic water.
Beppu (Oita, Kyushu)
More hot spring sources than anywhere in Japan. Try Takegawara Onsen sand bath: buried in naturally heated volcanic sand for 15 minutes. Only 1,500 yen.
Tokyo’s Secret Neighborhood Onsen
