Japanese martial arts (budo) are not just fighting techniques. They are paths to self-improvement. Many dojos across Japan welcome visitors for trial lessons, from the meditative focus of archery (kyudo) to the explosive energy of kendo.
Martial Arts You Can Try

Kyudo (Japanese Archery)
The most meditative martial art. Standing in a traditional kyudojo, drawing a 2-meter bamboo bow, and releasing the arrow is an almost spiritual experience. Trial sessions available in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kamakura. 3,000-6,000 yen for 90 minutes. No experience needed.
Kendo (Sword Fighting)
Fast, loud, and intense. Full protective armor, bamboo swords, and powerful strikes. Many university and community dojos allow visitors to watch or join practice. Trial sessions from 3,000 yen.
Judo
Visit the Kodokan in Tokyo, the birthplace of judo. Watch world-class judoka train from the viewing gallery (free) or arrange a trial session. The Kodokan also has a museum documenting judo’s history.
Aikido
Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Shinjuku is the world headquarters of aikido. Morning practice observation is free. Some dojos offer introductory classes for visitors.
