Tokyo

Studios in Asakusa and Yanaka offer English-guided sessions where you learn brush technique and write kanji characters or your name in Japanese. Sessions run 60-90 minutes for 3,000-5,000 yen. You keep everything you write.

Kyoto

Practice calligraphy in a traditional machiya townhouse. Some workshops combine calligraphy with tea ceremony for a complete cultural afternoon. 4,000-7,000 yen.

What You Will Learn

  • Brush holding technique: Very different from holding a pen
  • Basic strokes: The eight fundamental strokes that make up all characters
  • Writing kanji: Most classes teach you to write simple but beautiful characters like peace (wa), dream (yume), or love (ai)
  • Your name in katakana: Most instructors will write your name in Japanese for you to practice
