Morning markets (asaichi) are where rural Japan comes alive before dawn. Local farmers, fishermen, and craftspeople gather to sell fresh produce, seafood, and handmade goods. These markets have been running for decades, some for centuries, and they are completely untouched by tourism.
Must-Visit Morning Markets

Hakodate Morning Market – Hokkaido
Over 250 stalls selling the freshest seafood in Japan. The famous ikura don (salmon roe rice bowl) here costs 1,500-2,500 yen with roe so fresh it pops in your mouth. Open from 5 AM. Try the squid fishing experience where you catch and eat your own squid (500 yen).
Takayama Morning Market – Gifu
Two markets running simultaneously since the 1820s. Miyagawa Market along the river has local pickles, miso, and mountain vegetables. Jinya-mae Market near the old government building has crafts and snacks. Both open 6 AM – noon.
Wajima Morning Market – Ishikawa
A 1,000-year-old market on the Noto Peninsula. Over 200 stalls run by local grandmothers selling fresh seafood, dried fish, and Wajima lacquerware. One of the most authentic market experiences in Japan.
Katsuura Morning Market – Chiba
Only 2 hours from Tokyo by car. A 400-year-old market running every morning. Fresh fish, local vegetables, and homemade mochi. Perfect first stop on a Boso Peninsula driving trip.
Morning Market Tips
- Arrive early: 6-7 AM for the best selection
- Bring cash: Most stalls don’t accept cards
- Talk to vendors: Even with limited Japanese, pointing and smiling gets you far. Vendors often give free samples.
- Buy breakfast there: Skip the hotel breakfast and eat at the market
